Located in the heart of Ravenna, Seven Coffee Roasters Market & Cafe is the go-to coffee shop for the neighborhood.

With no other commercial establishment in the surrounding blocks, Seven is housed in a building that first opened as a grocery store in 1922 (that's 101 years ago, btw). Since they took over the space 15 years ago, Seven has continued the legacy of serving the neighborhood well.

The cafe has a little bit of everything — boasting a cozy, nostalgic neighborhood vibe, dedication to sustainable practices and serving up locally-roasted, Hawaiian-sourced coffee.

Anders Dowell, assistant manager at Seven, described the cafe as having "good vibes and [a] warm atmosphere." What more could you want from a coffee shop experience?

Though the space has been updated over the years, remnants of the past remain, like the original refrigerators from the grocery store. Dowell said that when customers come to the shop, it's like they "step into another world." He said that daily, customers remark on the cozy, cute neighborhood vibe of the shop.

Customer opinions are valued at Seven, and staff actively respond to customer suggestions.

"We'll go out of our way to make sure that [customers] are seeing a product they want," Dowel said, "and they feel heard, too."

Fun fact: Dowel grew up in the neighborhood and started coming to the shop years ago.

"It was the best place in the neighborhood to grab sleepover snacks, and it still is," he said.

A few years ago, a Seven employee (for a senior project) decided to focus on how to get the cafe to lower their carbon footprint by using 100% recyclable or compostable practices. While the cafe has had some setbacks to this goal throughout the pandemic, they remain committed to this ideal. Dowell said they compost everything they can, and that they collect all of their plastic film to recycle.

Seven owner Sean Lee is originally from Hawaii. Over the years, he has cultivated relationships with coffee growers in Hawaii, which has led to some premium Hawaiian coffee offerings available to Seven customers. Hawaiian-sourced coffee beans are a scarce resource due to limited land space for growing (and therefore more expensive than other coffee), but Seven offers two Hawaiian coffee blends — a 100% Kona and a 100% Oahu coffee.

"Not only is the coffee really good [and locally roasted in south Seattle]," Dowel said. "Everyone's having a good time."
